Chipwood boards: sheet material made of wood chips?
Chipwood is the English word for wood chips. It consists of leftover wood that is chipped. You often see it in gardens and paths as a substrate and to suppress weeds. It is also widely used in playgrounds on swings and climbing frames to soften the surface for children who might fall. Wood chips can also be a source of wood fibre used in fibreboards such as MDF. But did you know that the wood chips themselves are also used to make board material?
What is a Chipwood plate?
Chipwood boards are better known as MDF. OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board which literally translates as 'oriented strand board' and is made by sorting wood chips lengthwise and then impregnating them with glue. This creates mats of wood chips, three of which are then laid crossways on top of each other and pressed under high pressure and temperature to form a board.
Chipwood, or OSB, boards have a rough appearance. The wood chips are clearly visible and there are also clear colour differences between the wood chips. For this reason it is often used for structural applications where the board material is no longer visible when the project is finished.
The different classes of OSB Chipwood boards
OSB is produced in four different classes. Depending on the class to which the OSB board belongs, it can be used in different rooms or constructions.
OSB 1
OSB Class 1 boards are suitable for non-structural interior applications. It is the least strong class of the four and the boards are also not moisture-resistant enough to be used in damp rooms. OSB 1 is used in the manufacture of furniture and panelling. These boards are not widely available in the Netherlands.
OSB 2
OSB class 2 is a stronger board material that can be used for load-bearing constructions. However, the moisture-resistant properties are not yet sufficient for use in damp spaces. OSB 2 is used for floors and partition walls.
OSB 3
OSB class 3 is the strongest OSB board readily available. Like OSB 2, it can be used for floors and partition walls. Due to its better moisture-resistant properties, OSB 3 can also be used in damp spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens.
OSB 4
OSB class 4 is of even better quality than OSB 3. These boards are rarely available in the Netherlands and are mainly used in France in applications where OSB 3 does not meet the requirements.

The applications of OSB Chipwood panels
OSB is therefore widely used in construction. It is strong and attractively priced, and when it is being used, its rough appearance does not matter. Partition walls, floors and roofing underlays, for example, are made of OSB.
However, the rough appearance of OSB can also be used for decorative applications. Industrial influences are popular and the rough appearance of OSB fits in very well. OSB is therefore used in various decorative applications in the home. Walls, floors and also ceilings can be finished with OSB. The sheet material is also used to make furniture.
